Narada Muni once went to Vaikuntha and served Mother Laxmi very attentively. SriLaxmi was very pleased and requested Narada Muni to ask for any boon. Narada Muni replied."My dear Mother Laxmi, you must promise that whatever I ask for,you will grant."Laxmi Devi wowed that she would gladly fulfill his desire. NABAKALEBARA




Nabakalebara is an ancient ritual associated with most of the Jagannath Temple when the Idols of Lord Jagannath,Balabhadra,Shubhara and Sudarshan are replaced by a new of Idols.

Nabakalebara usually occurs in every 12 to 19 years.

A year which has two months of Ashadha as per the Hindu calendar is auspicious to conduct this ceremony. The Last Nabakalebara was celebrated in the year (1996) (2015).

Rituals associated with the Nabakalebara.

Twelve foot Dhanva mala for Lord Jagannath.

Garland is given to Pati Mahapatra family.

Secret robes of the Lord are given to the descendants of Bitarachha Mahapatra family.

Patta clothes are given to Lenka family and the nine Maharanas.

Finally makeup family members touch the forehead of each member of the procession with the Lord's sandal.
